The book Explanation of the Meanings of the Traditions is one of the greatest and most beneficial collections in Islam. It contains numerous advantages and unique benefits that can be found by those who examine it closely. As Al-Ayni stated, a fair observer will find it superior to many famous and accepted hadith books when he carefully examines its content and arrangement. Only an ignorant person or a biased individual would doubt this. In the introduction of The Meanings of the Virtuous, it is mentioned that the author compiled a book that explains the meanings of the traditions, surpassing other similar collections in its comprehensive nature and valuable insights. If one seeks Hadith, they will find it as vast as an ocean with its waves crashing. If one seeks jurisprudence, they will witness people delving into it in groups. Those who have studied it in depth continue to find new insights, and whoever acquires something from it obtains his desired goals. The one who grasps its essence embraces its richness, and whoever genuinely dedicates himself to it becomes knowledgeable in his time. Those who immerse themselves in it longingly say, Oh, if only the days of youth could return. This book has only been abandoned by envious and corrupt individuals, or those ignorant of its worth and biased against it. In Biographies of the Noble Figures, Al-Dhahabi mentioned that Abu Ja'far Al-Tahawi's writings demonstrate his vast knowledge and wide-ranging understanding. This book stands out because it contains many unique benefits not found in others. For instance, it includes a greater amount of narrations, where many hadiths found in other books are expanded upon with important additions, such as multiple chains of transmission that enhance the strength of the hadiths. It may also include a weak hadith found in other works with a strong chain of narration. Furthermore, it might contain different routes that were not available in other sources. The multiplicity of chains of transmission provides the researcher with valuable insights. Additionally, the book contains numerous benefits in the texts, presenting them extensively while other works present them concisely or briefly summarized, or they may present them in a general context while this book provides detailed explanations. It includes many narrations from the Prophet, the Companions, the Successors, and subsequent Imams concerning their opinions in fiqh matters, unparalleled by the compilations of Abdul Razzaq, Ibn Abi Shaybah, and Al-Muhalli. Therefore, Al-Ayni stated in his book on zakat, in the section on giving charity to the descendants of Hashim, that one should consider the broad range of narrations mentioned by Al-Tahawi and his extraordinary scholarly abilities. Al-Tahawi's book settles the disputes between different opinions on various fiqh matters by presenting their evidence and critically analyzing them, which appeals to unbiased researchers who reject blind imitation. This book is unmatched in its depth of fiqh, teaching the methods of fiqh, and developing the faculty of fiqh. In his introduction, Al-Tahawi explained the reason for writing this book, stating that he was asked by some knowledgeable people to compile a book that mentions the authentic traditions of the Prophet related to the disputed matters that perplex atheists and the weak among the Muslims. Some of these traditions contradict each other due to the limited knowledge of certain individuals regarding abrogation and the obligations that result from it, and what should be acted upon based on the clear testimony of the Qur'an and the agreed-upon Sunnah. Al-Tahawi organized his book in a similar structure to the books of fiqh, then he included the relevant traditions, highlighting important deductions from them that are often overlooked. He also explained the differences of scholars regarding these matters, providing evidence for different opinions and establishing the authority of those opinions that are supported by sound sources, such as books, hadiths, consensus, or widespread statements of the Companions and their Successors. After thorough examination and research, Al-Tahawi compiled chapters in accordance with the request and organized them accordingly, mentioning different types of evidence within each chapter.
